When to book your Rainbow Mountain ATV tour

Planning Updated October 2026 6 min read Inkanet Adventure · Cusco

Every tour website tells you to book now. Most of them have no idea whether that is true for your dates. We run one departure a day with a hard cap of 14 riders, so we actually do know when the machines run out — and when they do not.

The honest version of urgency

There are roughly a hundred and twenty days a year when booking late will cost you the day, and roughly two hundred and forty when it will not. The trick is knowing which half your trip falls in.

The constraint is the machines, not the mountain. Vinicunca does not sell out. Fourteen quads on a Tuesday in July absolutely do.

Month by month

The two weeks to plan around

Inti Raymi, around 24 June. Cusco is full, hotels double, and every tour in the region is under pressure for about ten days either side. If you are here then, book everything the moment your dates are fixed.

Peruvian Independence, 28–29 July. Domestic travel spikes, and that is the one period when the squeeze comes from inside the country rather than outside it.

The quiet recommendation

If you can move your dates at all, the second half of September is the best combination of firm track, clear sky and space on the mountain that this route offers all year.

How early is too early

You can book up to eighteen months ahead, and plenty of people do. The only thing worth weighing is the weather: committing in January to a date in February is committing to the wettest fortnight of the year.

Because cancelling 30 or more days ahead costs you nothing, booking early is a free option on a date rather than a bet. That is deliberate — we would rather you hold a good date than gamble on a late one.

If your dates are already fixed

Then the question is not when to book but how to sequence the days. Two rules, and they matter more than anything else on this page:

  1. Do not put Rainbow Mountain on your first or second day in Cusco. 5,030 metres on a fresh pair of lungs is a bad day, engine or no engine.
  2. Leave a spare day after it if you can. If weather closes the road, a reschedule needs somewhere to go.

Questions travelers ask us

Do you ever sell out completely?

The departure caps at 14 riders, so yes — regularly, in June, July and August. Above that number we run a second departure if we have the machines and a second guide, which is a question of days rather than hours.

Is it cheaper to book last minute?

No. The rate is flat and published, and it does not move with demand or with how close the date is. A last-minute booking costs exactly what the same booking cost three months earlier.

Can I book now and choose the date later?

The form needs a date to hold a machine. What you can do is book a likely date and move it — rescheduling 30 or more days out is free, and inside that we will always try.

What is the best month overall to ride?

September, narrowly, for the combination of dry ground, clear sky and fewer vehicles on the track. May is the close runner-up.
