Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour from Cusco
Ride a quad bike across the high Andes to Vinicunca and the Red Valley — five minutes of walking instead of a three-hour climb. Same colours, same altitude, a fraction of the effort.
The mountain is the reward. The climb is optional.
The classic route to Vinicunca is a three-hour walk up to 5,000 m, and plenty of travelers finish it exhausted — or turn back. On a quad bike you cover the same ground under engine power, arrive with energy left, and spend your time looking at the mountain instead of at your own boots.
You drive, we lead
One single-rider ATV each, helmet and safety gear supplied, and a guide riding ahead who sets a pace the whole group is comfortable with. No licence or previous experience needed.
Two landscapes, one day
Vinicunca's mineral stripes and then the Red Valley — an oxide-red basin that most day groups never reach, and that photographs even better than the mountain itself.
Doable at altitude
Five minutes of gentle walking at each viewpoint instead of hours of climbing. It is the difference between enjoying 5,030 m and merely surviving it.
Your day, hour by hour
One departure a day, and it leaves early for a reason: the colours read best in morning light, before the afternoon cloud builds over the ridge.
-
6:00 AM
Hotel pickup in Cusco
We collect you from your hotel in private tourist transport and drive roughly an hour and a half south, watching the Andes come up out of the dark.
-
7:30 AM
Breakfast in Cusipata
A semi-buffet breakfast and a proper pause — time for coffee, the bathroom, a look around the craft shop and any last snacks.
-
8:30 AM
Safety briefing, then you ride
Fifteen to twenty minutes with the guide on the machine itself: throttle, brakes, cornering, gravel. Then the group sets off through the mountains and rural tracks toward Vinicunca.
-
10:30 AM
Rainbow Mountain
Park the ATVs and walk about five minutes to the viewpoint. Free time for photographs and for simply standing still in very thin, very clean air.
-
12:00 PM
The Red Valley
Another short five-minute walk brings you to the Red Valley's deep ochre ridges and eroded formations — the part of the day most people did not expect to be their favourite.
-
1:30 PM
Lunch in Cusipata, then back to Cusco
Ride back down for a hearty semi-buffet lunch — vegetarian on request — before the drive home. You are normally back at your hotel in the early evening.
One honest note about the weather
Before sunrise at this altitude it is genuinely cold, and you will be riding into the wind. Travelers who bring a windproof jacket and gloves remember the views; travelers who bring a hoodie remember being cold. Pack for the ride, not for Cusco.

Pack for a cold ride, not for a hike
This is the list people actually need on an ATV day — short, and different from the trekking list you will find elsewhere. You will not need boots or poles.
- Windproof, waterproof jacket. The single most important item. You are moving fast through cold air.
- Gloves. Your hands are on the handlebars in the wind for hours.
- Thermal or fleece layer under the jacket; it is below freezing before dawn.
- Buff, scarf or neck gaiter plus a warm hat for under the helmet.
- Closed shoes with a solid sole — trainers are fine, sandals are not.
- Sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen with SPF lip balm. UV at 5,000 m is fierce even when it feels cold.
- Passport for the entrance ticket, and some soles in cash for snacks and tips.
- Phone or camera with a full battery — the cold drains them fast.

Questions travelers ask us
Still unsure about something? Ask us on WhatsApp — a person in Cusco answers, usually within minutes.
Do I need experience to ride an ATV?
No. Most of our riders have never touched a quad bike before. You get a 15–20 minute hands-on briefing from the guide before setting off — controls, braking, cornering, and how to handle loose gravel — and the route is ridden at a group pace, not a race. If you can ride a bicycle, you can do this.
How much walking is there?
Very little, and that is the whole point of this tour. The ATVs carry you to the parking area at each site, from where it is roughly a 5-minute walk to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint and another short 5-minute walk at the Red Valley. Compare that with the classic hike, which is about three hours uphill.
How high does the tour go, and will the altitude affect me?
The viewpoint sits at about 5,030 m (16,500 ft). That is high, and it is worth respecting even though you are not hiking: spend at least two days in Cusco first, drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol the night before, and walk slowly at the top. Because you are riding rather than climbing, the altitude is far gentler on your body than it is on the trekking route.
Does each person get their own ATV?
Yes — the price includes one single-rider ATV per traveler, with a helmet and safety equipment. If someone in your group would rather not drive, or you are travelling with children, message us on WhatsApp with their ages before you book and we will confirm the safest arrangement for your group.
What time does the tour start and finish?
We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 AM and you are usually back in the city by early evening — about 12 hours door to door. The early start is not negotiable: afternoon cloud rolls over Vinicunca most days, and the morning light is when the colours actually show.
When is the best time of year to go?
The dry season, May to September, gives the clearest skies, the firmest tracks and the strongest colour. April and October are good shoulder months. We run the tour year-round, but between December and March rain and cloud can mute the stripes and make the trails muddy.
What is included in the price?
Hotel pickup in Cusco, round-trip tourist transport, a professional guide, your ATV with helmet and safety equipment, entrance fees for both Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley, breakfast and lunch in Cusipata (vegetarian on request) and a first aid kit on board. Dinner, accommodation and tips are not included.
What should I wear and bring?
Warm layers plus a windproof, waterproof outer jacket — you will be moving at speed in cold mountain air. Closed shoes with a solid sole, gloves, a buff or scarf, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm. Bring some Peruvian soles in cash for snacks and tips, and your passport. You do not need hiking boots or trekking poles for this tour.
Can I cancel or change my date?
Yes. Cancel 30 or more days ahead for a full refund, or 15–29 days ahead for 50%. Within 14 days we cannot refund, because the permits, transport and ATVs are already committed. If we have to cancel for dangerous weather or a road closure, you choose between a free reschedule and a full refund.
How do I pay, and do I have to pay everything now?
You can pay the full amount by Visa, MasterCard or American Express through Izipay, or secure your spot with a 20% deposit now and settle the balance in cash when we pick you up in Cusco. Every card transaction is SSL-encrypted — we never see your card number.
