4:00 AM or 6:00 AM: which Rainbow Mountain ATV departure?
Our classic ATV + Red Valley tour leaves Cusco twice a day, at 4:00 AM and at 6:00 AM, on exactly the same route with the same guides and machines. The Express leaves at 6:00 AM only. Neither time is wrong: they trade two hours of sleep against an earlier arrival at the mountain.
Which one suits you depends on what you care about most — photographs, a calmer viewpoint, rest, or the rest of your itinerary. This guide lays out what each departure means for your day so the choice takes a minute.
The two departures side by side
Times are approximate and depend on traffic and on the group. If your hotel is outside the historic centre, we collect you up to 30 minutes earlier. The full hour-by-hour plan is on the tour page.

Why choose 4:00 AM
The early departure puts you on the high plain and at the viewpoints earlier in the morning. In the Andes the sky is usually at its clearest in the first half of the day, and clouds tend to build towards midday, especially in the wet months from December to March. If photographs are a priority, the earlier slot gives you the more reliable light.
It also gets you home earlier, around 5:30–6:00 PM, in time for a proper dinner and a normal night's sleep — useful if Machu Picchu or another early start follows. Depending on the day, the viewpoints are often calmer before the busiest late-morning period.

Two more hours of sleep matter more than most people expect when the body is still adjusting to 3,400 m in Cusco. The later start is gentler on travelers who arrived recently, on families and on anyone who sleeps badly at altitude. The ride across the high plain is also less cold once the sun is up.
It is the only departure for the ATV Express, our tour with a five-minute walk and the entrance included, so if walking is the issue the decision is already made.
How the season changes the choice
From May to September, the dry season, mornings are cold and bright and both departures usually see blue sky; the 4:00 AM start is simply colder on the quad. From December to March, rain and cloud are more likely in the afternoon, which tips the balance towards the earlier departure. April, October and November sit in between. Our month-by-month weather guide has the details, and when to book explains which weeks fill up first.
Who should pick which
- Photographers and early risers: 4:00 AM.
- Machu Picchu or a flight the next day: 4:00 AM, for the earlier return.
- Arrived in Cusco in the last two days: 6:00 AM, and rest.
- Families with children or older relatives: 6:00 AM, ideally on the Express.
- Private groups: choose your own time; the private service leaves when it suits you.
The night before either departure
- Eat a light dinner and skip alcohol.
- Lay out your layers, gloves and a warm hat; our packing guide lists them.
- Put your passport and S/30 in cash per person for the gate in an inside pocket (not needed on the Express).
- Charge your phone and bring a power bank; the cold drains batteries.
- Wait in the hotel lobby five minutes before your pickup time.
