Only one free day in Cusco: is Rainbow Mountain by ATV the right call?
A lot of itineraries arrive in Cusco with exactly one unspoken day in them, and Rainbow Mountain is almost always one of the candidates for it. It is also the most demanding thing on the shortlist, by a distance.
We sell this day, and we also sell the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu through our sister sites, so we have no particular reason to push you onto the mountain. Here is how we would actually decide.
What the day costs you in hours
Pickup at 06:00. Back in Cusco around dinner. That is roughly 12 hours door to door, of which about six are in a van.
There is no half-day version of this and there is no late departure on the shared tour. If your single free day also contains a flight, a train, a check-out or a dinner reservation, this is the wrong day for it.
The acclimatisation question
This is the one that decides it, and it has nothing to do with the tour.
If your free day is your first or second in Cusco, do not spend it at 5,030 metres. Not on a quad, not on foot, not at all. Cusco is already 3,400 m and most people need two nights before they stop noticing it. Going to five thousand on top of that, on day one, is how a holiday turns into a day in bed.
We will tell you this before we take your money
If you write to us and your dates make this your first day in Cusco, we will say so. It costs us a booking and it saves you a day, and we would rather have the second outcome.
When it is the right call
- You have been in Cusco two nights or more already. The single biggest factor, and it is binary.
- Your day is genuinely free. No flight, no train, no check-out.
- You came for landscape rather than ruins. Nothing else within a day of Cusco looks remotely like Vinicunca and the Red Valley.
- You are between April and October. Outside that the odds of cloud over the colours rise sharply.
- You want it to be an event. One free day and you want to spend it on the thing you will actually describe to people — that is a legitimate way to choose.
If the day fits, hold it now
One departure a day, 14 riders maximum. On a fixed schedule, that is the constraint.
From $60 per person
Check availability Ask on WhatsAppWhen it is not
- Day one or two in Cusco. Covered above, and worth repeating.
- January or February. Mud, cloud and muted colour. You will have spent your only day on a grey mountain.
- If you have anything else scheduled that day. 12 hours is 12 hours.
- If anyone in the party is genuinely struggling with the altitude in Cusco. It gets worse up there, not better.
What to do instead
If the answer above was “not this trip”, the two honest alternatives from Cusco are the Sacred Valley — lower than the city, which actively helps your acclimatisation — and Machu Picchu, which is a long day but a far lower one at about 2,400 m.
Both are run by the same company through vallesagradoperu.com and inkanetadventure.com. We would genuinely rather send you there on the right day than put you on a mountain on the wrong one.
How to sequence it if you book
- Arrive in Cusco. Do nothing demanding for 48 hours — the city, the markets, a low valley.
- Put Rainbow Mountain on day three or later.
- Book a date with a spare day after it if the schedule allows, so a weather reschedule has somewhere to go.
- Sleep early the night before. Pickup is 06:00 and breakfast is on the road.
Questions travelers ask us
How long is the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour?
About 12 hours door to door, leaving your hotel at 06:00 and back in Cusco around dinner time. Roughly six of those hours are driving.
Can I do Rainbow Mountain the day I arrive in Cusco?
You can book it. We will advise you not to, and if you ask us directly we will tell you to move it. 5,030 m on an unacclimatised body is the most reliable way to ruin a day in Peru.
Is there a half-day or afternoon option?
No. The mountain is three hours from Cusco and the light and weather are best in the morning. A shorter version of this day does not exist in a useful form.
Can I do Rainbow Mountain and the Sacred Valley on the same day?
No — they are in opposite directions and each fills a day. If you only have one, pick one.
