ATV tours in Cusco: Rainbow Mountain or the Sacred Valley?

Cusco ATV Updated October 2026 5 min read Inkanet Adventure · Cusco

Search for ATV tours in Cusco and you will find two very different days sold under the same name: short quad rides through the farmland of the Sacred Valley, and the full-day ride to Rainbow Mountain at 5,030 metres. Both are fun. They are not the same experience, and choosing the wrong one is the most common regret we hear from travelers.

We only run the Rainbow Mountain ride, and we say so up front. Even so, here is an honest comparison of the main quad options around Cusco, with a simple way to decide which one fits your trip — or whether you should do both.

Rainbow Mountain by ATV: the big day

This is the ride most people have in mind when they search for an ATV tour in Cusco. A van takes you down the Vilcanota valley to breakfast in Cusipata and on to the Laya community, where the quads wait. After the briefing you ride 30 to 40 minutes across the high plain to the trailhead, walk ten to fifteen minutes to the Red Valley and continue on foot to the Vinicunca viewpoint.

The quads replace the long climb from the valley floor, so you reach two of Peru's most striking landscapes — landscapes most day groups never combine — with energy left to enjoy them. If you want to walk as little as possible, the ATV Express parks five minutes below the viewpoint. The full itinerary is on the tour page.

Sacred Valley quad routes: the gentle option

The half-day quad rides sold in the Sacred Valley usually cross the plateau around Chinchero and Maras, with stops at places such as the circular terraces of Moray and the Maras salt pans. The altitude is much lower than at Rainbow Mountain, the riding is relaxed and you are back by early afternoon. They make a good warm-up for your first days, when a 5,000-metre viewpoint would be too much.

Which one fits your trip

  • One day, the iconic view: Rainbow Mountain by ATV.
  • You landed yesterday: do something low first and ride to Rainbow Mountain on day three. Our acclimatisation plan explains the timing.
  • Walking at altitude is the problem: the ATV Express has a five-minute walk.
  • Colours and the Red Valley together: the classic ATV + Red Valley tour.
  • You love riding and have time: a gentle valley ride early in your stay, Rainbow Mountain later.

A simple four-day Cusco plan with an ATV day

Our guide to fitting Rainbow Mountain into a short stay has more variations.

  1. Day 1: arrive, rest and walk the historic centre slowly.
  2. Day 2: a low day trip in the Sacred Valley, by quad or by van.
  3. Day 3: Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley by ATV; see which departure to choose.
  4. Day 4: Machu Picchu, with energy to spare.

Five questions to ask before booking any ATV tour

Our answers: helmets and a 20-minute briefing for everyone, prices per quad with sharing allowed, the S/30 entrance at the gate (included on the Express), about two hours on foot on the classic route, and our own Cusco team on every departure. Our entrance fee guide and safety guide explain the details, and booking takes five minutes.

  1. Is a helmet included, and is there a briefing before riding?
  2. Is the price per person or per quad, and can two people share one machine?
  3. Is the community entrance fee included, or paid in cash at the gate?
  4. How much walking is left after the quads park?
  5. Who operates the day — a local team or a reseller?

Not on our tour: no licence or experience is needed, and everyone does a briefing and practice loop first.
