Palccoyo or Vinicunca: which coloured mountain should you ride?
Search for Rainbow Mountain and you will quickly find somebody telling you to go to Palccoyo instead: lower, easier, emptier. It is good advice for a particular kind of traveler and bad advice for another, and almost all of it is written about walking.
We ride Vinicunca. Here is why, and when we would tell you to go elsewhere.
The two mountains, briefly
Vinicunca is the one on the postcards: a single sharp ridge banded in red, ochre, turquoise and lilac, at 5,030 metres, about three hours south of Cusco. The Red Valley sits over the far side of it.
Palccoyo is a cluster of three lower, broader coloured ridges roughly an hour further on, topping out around 4,900 m, with a much shorter walk from the car park and a stone forest nearby.
The comparison that matters
| Vinicunca — by ATV | Palccoyo — on foot | |
|---|---|---|
| Highest point | 5,030 m | About 4,900 m |
| Walking | About 5 minutes per viewpoint | About 45–60 minutes, gentle |
| The colours | One dramatic banded ridge | Three broader, softer ridges |
| Crowds | Busy in July and August | Much quieter |
| Red Valley | In the same day | Not there at all |
| Adrenaline | The ride is half the day | None |
| Total day | 12 hours | About 11 hours |
Why Palccoyo gets recommended
Because for a walker it genuinely solves two real problems. The altitude is a few hundred metres lower, which matters more than it sounds at this height, and the walk from the car park is short and flat enough that almost anybody can do it.
If the reason you were avoiding Vinicunca was the three-hour climb, Palccoyo is a perfectly good answer — and so, for what it is worth, is a quad bike.
The thing those articles rarely say
Palccoyo is lower, quieter and easier, and it is also less dramatic. The colours are real but they are spread across broad slopes rather than concentrated into one ridge. People who go expecting the photograph they saw of Vinicunca sometimes come back slightly deflated.

Because the machine removes the one thing Palccoyo was solving. With a 5-minute walk at each viewpoint, the effort argument for the lower mountain largely disappears, and what is left is the comparison nobody wants to make out loud: Vinicunca is the more striking mountain.
The Red Valley seals it. It is on the far side of the Vinicunca ridge, it is included in our day, and it has no equivalent at Palccoyo. For a lot of our riders it ends up being the photograph they keep.
Which one to choose
- Ride Vinicunca if you want the famous ridge, the Red Valley and a day with some adrenaline in it — and you have acclimatised properly.
- Walk Palccoyo if altitude genuinely worries you, if you want quiet above everything, or if you have already done Vinicunca and want the other one.
- Walk Vinicunca if the climb itself is the point. That is our sister site’s day, not ours, and they run it well.
We do not currently run Palccoyo by quad bike. If somebody tells you they do, ask what the track is like — the access road is a different proposition from the Vinicunca route.
Questions travelers ask us
Can you do Palccoyo by ATV?
We do not run it. Our departures go to Vinicunca and the Red Valley, which is the route our guides, machines and permissions are set up for.
Is Palccoyo really less crowded?
Yes, substantially — it is further from Cusco and far less photographed. If quiet is your priority above the view itself, that is a real advantage.
Which has better colours?
Vinicunca, in most conditions and for most people. Palccoyo has more coloured ground; Vinicunca has the concentrated banded ridge that the photographs are of.
Can I do both?
On separate days, yes, and some travelers do. They are in roughly the same direction but each is a full day from Cusco.
