The Red Valley by ATV: the stop most Rainbow Mountain tours skip

Where you go Updated October 2026 6 min read Inkanet Adventure · Cusco

Ask someone who has been to Vinicunca what surprised them and a striking number say the same thing: the second stop. Twenty minutes beyond the famous ridge lies a wide basin of deep rust-red hillsides, eroded into ribs and folds, usually with almost nobody in it.

It is called the Red Valley — Valle Rojo — and it is included on our ATV day for a practical reason rather than a generous one.

What the Red Valley actually is

The same geology that stripes Vinicunca, concentrated into one colour. Iron-rich sediment, oxidised over millions of years and then cut by water and wind into a landscape that reads more like Utah or Mars than the Andes.

It sits at a similar altitude to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, on the far side of the ridge, and it is considerably larger than photographs suggest — a broad amphitheatre rather than a single viewpoint.

Why most groups miss it

Two reasons, and neither is about the place being unimpressive.

  1. It needs a separate ticket. On most trekking itineraries it is an optional paid add-on bought on the day, so a tired group often declines it.
  2. It needs more walking. After three hours of climbing to Vinicunca, the extra distance is the last thing a lot of hikers want. We watch groups turn it down every week.

On a quad bike both obstacles disappear. The machines cover the distance in minutes, so the extra effort is a five-minute walk rather than another climb — and because of that we can include the entrance fee in the base price instead of selling it as an upsell at the gate.

Included, not an add-on

Our rate covers entrance to both Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley. There is nothing to buy on the mountain, which is worth checking against any other quote you are comparing.

What the visit involves

On our itinerary it is the stop after Vinicunca, at around midday.

When it looks best

The red is strongest in dry-season light, roughly May to September, when there is no cloud flattening the contrast and no mud dulling the surface. Midday actually suits the Red Valley better than it suits Vinicunca: the high sun that washes out the striped ridge brings out depth in the folds here.

That timing is not a coincidence in our itinerary. We reach Vinicunca in morning light and the Red Valley around noon, which gives each stop the light it photographs best in.

Honest expectations

It is red, not neon. Heavily saturated photographs circulating online oversell it, and if you arrive expecting those colours you will be disappointed by a landscape that is genuinely remarkable.

It is also high. The same altitude advice applies: walk slowly, breathe, do not sprint for a photograph.

And it is cold and exposed, with wind coming across the basin. If you have packed a windproof jacket for the ride you will be glad of it standing still here too.

Questions travelers ask us

Is the Red Valley included in the price?

Yes. Entrance to both Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley is in the rate, along with transport, the guide, your ATV with safety equipment, breakfast and lunch. Nothing to pay at the gate.

How far is it from Rainbow Mountain?

Close enough that it is minutes by ATV and a short walk from where we park. On foot from the Vinicunca viewpoint it is enough extra distance that tired trekking groups routinely skip it.

Is it worth it if I have already seen Vinicunca?

Honestly, yes — a lot of our riders end up preferring it. It is bigger, emptier and stranger-looking, and you will usually have it almost to yourself.

Can you visit the Red Valley without Rainbow Mountain?

They are on the same route and the same ticketing area, so in practice they are one day out. Our tour does both, in the order that gives each one its best light.
