Is the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour worth it? An honest verdict
We sell the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour, so read this knowing that. We also send people to the hike when it suits them better, because a traveler who is miserable at 5,000 metres is bad for them and bad for us. So here is the version we give friends: what the quad really changes, what it costs compared with walking, and who it is — and is not — worth it for.
The short answer: it is worth it if the climb is what worries you, if you only have two or three days in Cusco, or if you want to see the Red Valley without a punishing day. It is not worth it if you are already well acclimatised, love long walks and are travelling on a tight budget.
What you are actually paying for
The view does not change. You stand at the same 5,030 m viewpoint, in front of the same mineral stripes, as every hiker that day. What changes is the approach. On the classic trek you climb on foot for about three hours from the valley floor; on the ATV tour that climb is replaced by 30 to 40 minutes riding a quad across the high plain, with photo stops.
In practice you are paying to arrive with energy. That matters because the altitude, not the distance, is what wears people down, and most travelers who struggle at Rainbow Mountain struggle on the ascent rather than at the top.
| Classic hike | ATV + Red Valley | ATV Express | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time on foot | About 4.5 hours | About 2 hours | 5 min each way |
| Red Valley | Usually an extra | Included | No |
| Effort at altitude | High | Moderate | Low |
| Entrance fee | Paid at the gate | S/30 at the gate | Included |
| Price | Lowest | $65 per quad / $60 each sharing | $90 per person |
The numbers, honestly
Hiking tours are the cheapest way to Rainbow Mountain, and we will not pretend otherwise. The question is how big the gap is for your group. Two travelers sharing one quad on the classic tour pay $120 in total plus S/30 each at the community gate, which works out at $60 per person plus the fee. Two travelers on separate quads pay $130. On the Express, two people pay $180 with the entrance already included.
Breakfast and lunch in Cusipata, hotel pickup, the guide and the helmets are included in all three. There is no booking fee and no group discount ladder; the full breakdown, including how the 20% deposit works, is in our ATV price guide. If budget is the deciding factor, our look at cheap Rainbow Mountain tours shows where low prices usually cut corners.
It is worth it if…
- The climb is what worries you. The quads remove the long ascent, which is the part of the day that defeats most visitors.
- You have few days in Cusco. Reaching 5,030 m with energy left makes a real difference while your body is still adjusting.
- You want the Red Valley too. On the classic ATV tour it is on the route, ten to fifteen minutes on foot from where the quads park. Our Red Valley guide shows why it is worth it.
- You are two people. Sharing a quad costs $60 each, which narrows the gap with a hiking tour considerably.
- Machu Picchu or a flight comes the next day and you do not want to arrive drained.

If walking suits you better, our guide to the Rainbow Mountain trek explains the route honestly and tells you how to prepare.
- You have spent a week in the Andes, feel strong and enjoy long walks: the trek is a great day out and cheaper.
- Every dollar of your budget is already allocated.
- You were hoping for no walking at all on the classic tour. There are still about two hours on foot; in that case choose the Express.
The value people forget: the next day
A full hiking day at 5,000 m often costs travelers the following day as well, spent recovering in the hotel. The ATV day is still long — about fourteen hours door to door — but riders on the 4:00 AM departure are back in Cusco around 5:30–6:00 PM, usually with enough energy for dinner and the next plan. If your itinerary is tight, that saved day can be worth more than the price difference. Our guide to fitting Rainbow Mountain into a short Cusco stay shows how to plan around it.
Classic ATV or Express?
Choose the classic ATV + Red Valley tour for the fuller day with two landscapes and the best price for couples. Choose the ATV Express if walking at altitude is the real problem: five minutes on foot each way, one quad per person and one all-inclusive price. Our side-by-side comparison settles it if you are still undecided.
Our verdict
For most visitors with two or three days in Cusco, the quad is worth it: the same mountain for a fraction of the effort, with the Red Valley included on the classic route. Book on the tour page, pay 20% now and cancel free 30 or more days ahead if your plans change.
