Rainbow Mountain by ATV for two: one machine or two?

For two Updated October 2026 6 min read Inkanet Adventure · Cusco

This is the most common question in our inbox from couples, and it is a genuine decision rather than an upsell. A machine carrying two costs $120. Two machines cost $130. The difference is $10 — not nothing, not very much.

We have watched several thousand couples do this day both ways. Here is what actually separates them.

What sharing is actually like

The machines are built for two: a long seat, a proper grab rail, and enough power to carry two adults at this altitude without labouring. The passenger sits behind, holds on, and spends the day looking at the Andes instead of at the track.

The thing couples underestimate is how much warmer the back seat is. At 06:00 on a July morning you are riding into genuinely cold air, and the person in front takes all of it. If one of you feels the cold badly, that is a real argument for sharing.

The driver, meanwhile, has a job for four hours. Some people love that. Some people wanted a holiday.

The passenger seat is the warmer seat, and the only one with free hands.

What riding separately changes

Two machines means two people learning to ride, two people making their own line through the gravel, and two people arriving at the viewpoint having done the thing rather than been carried through it.

It is also, bluntly, the version that people remember. In our experience couples who take one each talk about the riding afterwards; couples who share talk about the mountain. Neither is wrong.

You do not both need experience

Every departure starts with the same 20-minute briefing and a practice loop on flat ground. People who have never sat on a quad ride their own machine here every week. If after the practice loop one of you would rather not, we move you onto the back of the other machine and refund the difference on the spot.

Who should share

  • If one of you actively does not want to drive. Do not buy a machine for someone who will spend four hours wishing they were a passenger.
  • If one of you feels the cold badly. The back seat is meaningfully warmer.
  • If you want photographs of each other riding. A passenger with free hands gets shots nobody else on the departure gets.
  • If the $10 matters to your trip. It is a perfectly good reason and we will not argue with it.

Who should not

  • If you both want to ride. Obvious, but worth saying: there is no half-measure here, and the person on the back is a passenger for the whole day.
  • If you are both tall or heavy. Two large adults on one machine at 5,030 m is slower and less comfortable than the spec sheet suggests. Message us and we will tell you honestly.
  • If you argue about directions at home. Said with love, and said from experience.

The photographs nobody thinks about

On a shared machine the passenger can shoot while moving, which produces the only photographs from this day that look like motion rather than like a car park. On two machines you get two sets of stationary shots and nothing in between, unless one of you stops and waits.

If the pictures matter more than the driving, that single fact decides it.

Questions travelers ask us

Is it cheaper for two people to share one quad?

Yes. One machine carrying two costs $120, which is $60 each. Two machines cost $130. There is no further discount in either direction — the rates are flat and published.

Can we swap who drives during the day?

Yes, at any of the stops, as long as both of you did the briefing. Plenty of couples do exactly this: one drives up, the other drives back.

Is two people on one quad safe at that altitude?

Yes. The machines are rated for two adults and the route is mountain track and rural road at a group pace, not an off-road course. The altitude affects the riders far more than it affects the engine.

What if we book one machine and change our minds?

Tell us before the day and we will adjust the booking if a machine is free. On the day itself we can usually add one, but in July and August we often genuinely cannot.
