Rainbow Mountain by ATV with children: the honest version

Families Updated October 2026 7 min read Inkanet Adventure · Cusco

Families write to us about this day more than any other group, and almost always for the same reason: somebody has read that Rainbow Mountain involves a three-hour climb at 5,030 metres and correctly concluded that their eight-year-old is not doing that.

The ATV day removes the climb. It does not remove the altitude, the 06:00 pickup or the three-hour drive, and those are the parts that actually decide whether a family has a good day.

Why families ask about the ATV day at all

On the walking route a child has to cover roughly five kilometres uphill in thin air, and the usual fallback — hiring a horse — is its own decision at that altitude. Plenty of families get up there and plenty do not.

Here the machines park minutes from each viewpoint. The walking is about 5 minutes at Vinicunca and another 5 at the Red Valley. For a child who can walk up a long flight of stairs slowly, that is achievable in a way the trek is not.

Ages: the honest answer

We do not publish a hard minimum age, because the right answer depends on the child rather than the number. What we do is ask you to message us with their ages before you book, and then tell you what we actually think.

Broadly, and with every caveat:

AgeUsuallyHow they ride
Under 6We will usually say noThe day is long and cold before the altitude is even counted
6–11Case by case — ask usAs a passenger behind a parent
12–15Normally finePassenger, or their own machine if they are big enough
16+Their own machineSame briefing as everyone else

Size matters as much as age for riding alone: feet need to reach, hands need to work the brake.

Altitude and children

This is the part that deserves more attention than the machines do. Children are not more susceptible to altitude than adults, but they are much worse at telling you that something is wrong until it is quite wrong.

Two nights in Cusco before this day is not a recommendation for families, it is the whole plan. We carry oxygen on every departure and the guides have seen plenty of children at this height, but none of that substitutes for arriving acclimatised.

The warning signs to watch for

Headache, unusual quietness, loss of appetite, nausea. In a child the quietness often comes first. Tell the guide immediately — going down a few hundred metres fixes almost everything, and we would far rather turn a family around early than finish the itinerary.

The 06:00 start

A shared departure leaves your hotel at 06:00. For a lot of families that is the hardest part of the day, and it is the single most common reason we suggest the private option instead — a private departure can leave later, which turns a miserable morning into a manageable one.

If you do take the shared departure: get everybody to bed early, lay the clothes out the night before, and let them sleep in the van. The drive is three hours and the road is good.

What makes it work

  • Two nights in Cusco first. Non-negotiable with children.
  • Proper warm layers. Children get cold faster and complain about it longer. Gloves, a hat under the helmet and a windproof outer layer.
  • A later start, if you can afford it. The private departure exists partly for this.
  • Snacks and water in the van. Breakfast is in Cusipata, about ninety minutes after pickup.
  • Managing expectations about the 5-minute walk. It is short, but it is uphill and at 5,030 m it feels longer than it looks.

What we would talk you out of

  1. Doing this on your first full day in Cusco. We will say no, and we have.
  2. Putting a child under about twelve on their own machine. Not because of the speed — because of hand strength on a brake lever when it matters.
  3. A toddler. Twelve hours door to door, three of them in a van each way, at altitude, in the cold. There are better days in the Sacred Valley.
  4. Booking without telling us the ages. We would rather lose the booking than put a child on an unsuitable machine at 5,030 metres.

Questions travelers ask us

What is the minimum age for the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour?

There is no fixed number, because size and temperament matter more than age. Message us with your children’s ages and heights before booking and we will give you a straight answer — including no, if that is the answer.

Can a child ride as a passenger with a parent?

Yes, and for most children under about twelve that is what we recommend. You book a quad for two, which costs $120 for the machine.

Is Rainbow Mountain safe for kids at 5,030 m?

It is as safe as it is for adults, provided they are acclimatised. The risk is altitude, not the machines. Two nights in Cusco first, oxygen on the departure, and a guide who is told immediately if a child goes quiet.

Should we book private for a family?

Often, yes — mainly for the later departure time and the unhurried pace rather than for exclusivity. It costs $260 per person, which for a family of four is a real decision.

Do children pay less?

The price follows the machine, not the person, so there is no child rate. A parent and child on one quad is $120.
